Antique Indonesian Ikat textile from the island of Sumba. In pristine condition kept out of sunlight. Made with all natural dyes. Hand woven and knotted. Loomed to produce a 48” long weaving that is 22” wide. Distinctive contrasting striped selvage edges. These techniques are no longer practiced to produce this quality of weaving. Highly collectible. Ikat is a dye resist process whereby parts of the warp or weft are protected usually with wax or string ties to resist the dye process. Variants of color are produced by intervals of exposure to the dye bath. Or binding/ bundling yarns tightly. Extremely time consuming process. This process occurs prior to weaving the fabric.
