The most macabre & sinister mask is the old ‘Plague Doctor’ or ‘Medico Della Peste’ mask. It’s a prominent feature at the Venice Carnival & masquerade balls. The bubonic plague, aka ‘The Black Death,’ swept through Europe in the 1300s. It was thought people fell sick due to inhaling foul-smelling air. Doctors wore a covering that featured a long, hollow, curved, bird-like beak that was stuffed with herbs to counteract noxious air.
