Box and contents factory sealed in 1995. Never been opened.
The 24,490 lbs. Astronomical Instrument was launched into space aboard the Spce Shuttle Discovery STS-31 on April 24, 1990. Released into an orbit approximately 349 miles above Earth. The HST is controlled from the ground at the Goddard Spaceflight Center in Maryland. The HST provides unprecedented views of the universe and has viewed cosmic formations ranging from black holes to planetary systems, worm holes, galaxies and interstellar phenomena. Last serviced by Astronauts aboard the Space Shuttle Atlantis on STS-135 in May 29, 2009, the HST was designed to be visited periodically by astronaut crews for upgrades and maintenance. Cancellation of the Space Transportation System Shuttle Orbiter's does not provide NASA with any future options for repairs in space. The HST life expectancy is estimated to conclude around 2025 - 2030.
